Chicago's South Side, 1946-1948 by Wayne Miller,

Chicago's South Side, 1946-1948 by Wayne Miller,
Wayne Miller's photographs chronicle a black Chicago of fifty years ago: the South Side community that burgeoned as thousands of African Americans, almost exclusively from the South, settled in the city during the Great Migration of the World War II years. The black-and-white images provide a visual history of Chicago at the height of its industrial order -- when the stockyards, steel mills, painter chicago and factories were booming -- but, more important, they capture the intimate moments in the daily lives of ordinary people. Miller was adept at becoming invisible, painter chicago and his photographs are full of naked, disarming emotion. One of the first Western photographers to document the destruction of Hiroshima painter chicago and the survivors of the bombing, Wayne Miller had just returned from his stint as a World War II Navy combat photographer under the direction of Edward Steichen when he received two concurrent Guggenheim fellowships to fund his Chicago project. Taken over a course of three years beginning in 1946, his photographs span city scenes from storefront church services to slaughterhouse workers in the taverns at night to a couple making love. In addition to affording a glimpse into the hopes painter chicago and hardships shared by a community of migrants who had just made the long journey from the rural South to the urban North, the images collected in Chicago's South Side reflect the enormous variety of human experiences painter chicago and emotions that occurred at a unique time painter chicago and place in the American landscape. A few celebrities appear in these images -- Paul Robeson, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, Duke Ellington. But mostly we see ordinary people -- in clubs painter chicago and at church, sporting events, parades. Much is on view that is ofinterest to the student of mid-twentieth-century black Chicago: the neighborhoods Richard Wright's Bigger Thomas traversed in Native Son, the Bronzeville limned in Gwendolyn Brooks's earliest poems, painter chicago and the street life that inspired the urbanscapes of painter Archibald Motley.

Master Painter: Warner E. Sallman by Jack R. Lundbom, X

Master Painter: Warner E. Sallman by Jack R. Lundbom, X
Millions of Christians recognize the religious painting known as the "Head of Christ", of which an estimated 500 million prints have been sold. Very few, however, know the artist, Warner E. Sallman. Sallman's lack of notoriety in professional art circles can be explained by the fact that he made little or no attempt to put himself forward as a Chicago -- or even a Swedish-American -- artist. He had no exhibitions of his works, painter chicago and his public life consisted largely of appearances before church painter chicago and community groups to do chalk drawings. More important was his own attitude regarding personal fame. Sallman let the Christ he painted be in the foreground. The artist remained in the background. "The time has come", argues Jack R. Lundbom, "for a broader public to know the man who stands behind the paintings painter chicago and other artwork bearing the Sallman signature". Master Painter is a fascinating story of a gifted man with humble beginnings who overcame disappointment, ill health, painter chicago and personal limitations in order to live out a vision: that his art serve not only the enjoyment of humankind, but the practical end of instructing persons in the ways of God. Readers who know the art can now know the artist. It is a story eminently worth telling painter chicago and one a broad public will be interested to know.
